Richard was born in a rural area near, Cincinnati, Ohio. Lanie, originally from Holland, immigrated to Cincinnati when she was 10 years old, with her family. The last 12 years in spent in Cincinnati, they owned and operated a Real Estate Appraisal Company. Changes in the appraisal industry along with the stress levels led them to a decision, that when their daughters were raised and on their own, they would move South. The idea of a Bed and Breakfast grew from a comment made by their son in law. Reasons to move South included abandoning the cold winters, locating closer to the ocean and mountains and through their travels had always enjoyed the friendliness and slower paced atmosphere of small towns.
They were visiting a few bed and breakfasts located approximately 1-2 hours from Abbeville, January 2003, which were for sale at that time. A few of the Innkeepers mentioned "Abbeville" and they decided to visit the town, before returning home. It was an immediate welcoming "feeling", with the small town square and beautiful historic homes. The countryside surroundings were a welcoming feeling to Richard and the small quaint town brought back the coziness Lanie experienced while living in Holland. The current home was listed "For Sale by Owner"; it was not a Bed and Breakfast at that time. After 9 months of physical work and hired help, Hearthside Manor was born. The rooms are named after family members. Renae and Laura, are their two daughters, Katlyn and Mark are the grandbabies. Richard and Lanie are still in "love" with Abbeville and their change in lifestyle, and are grateful to the wonderful people of the town who have always made them feel so much at home showing the true meaning of Southern Hospitality.
When you visit Richard and Lanie, you will feel the comfortable atmosphere created in this gracious home.
